Westin Resort Macau records US$3mn energy savings

By HMA Staff 02 June 2010

Accumulated savings from its energy management program have passed the US$3 million mark, the Westin Resort Macau has announced.

The energy management program used by the 200-room hotel helped reduce emissions by 21,000 metric tonnes, the hotel reported.

“We are of course very pleased to have delivered US$3 million in additional net profits to the resort’s owners over the life of this program, but we also recognise that with the United Nations and the Chinese government both having declared climate change to be amongst the greatest challenges of our time, and energy consumption being the chief cause of that problem, what the planet needs is substantial emission reductions,” said The Westin Resort general manager Humayoon Shaikhzadeh.

Shaikhzadeh said there was no particular secret to the Starwood-operated hotel’s success, it was merely a case of a through action plan and perseverance.

Passing the US$3 million mark was something of a unique achievement, however, commented Robert Allender, managing director of energy management consultancy firm Energy Resources Management, which advised the hotel on the program.

“We often get to recount that our clients have saved $30,000 or $300,000, but a $3 million achievement – that’s a first. This hotel has single-handedly saved what others have accumulated for an entire portfolio of hotels,” he said.
