URBN seeks to develop ‘most sustainable hotel in Asia’

Chinese real estate developer Vanke has teamed up with boutique hotel company URBN Hotels & Resorts to create a sustainable hotel in Shanghai.
The URBN Hotel Pudong is scheduled for opening in spring 2012. It will offer 55 rooms plus 50 serviced residences, and also include dining, wellness and art spaces.
In a statement, the two companies said they were hoping to create ‘the most forward-thinking, sustainably-built and green-operated hotel in Asia.’
"The aim is to make this hotel go beyond sustainability ... it will be the first positive-impact hotel in China", said Jules Kwan, managing director of URBN Hotels & Resorts.
The hotel will be carbon neutral, and will discharge water that is cleaner than the water from the city's water supply, URBN, which is hoping to achieve LEED and China Green Star certification, said.
URBN is collaborating with Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki on the design project.
The Pudong hotel will be UBRN’s second sustainable hotel in Shanghai; it already operates the URBN Hotel Shanghai.
