Jumeirah Group chooses Shanghai for first VENU hotel

Dubai-based luxury hospitality company Jumeirah Group has selected Shanghai for the first property under its new lifestyle brand VENU.

The group announced it has signed a management agreement with Shanghai Zendai Himalayas Real Estate Co to manage VENU Himalayas Hotel Shanghai.

The hotel, which will be located in the Pudong district of Shanghai, is scheduled to open in 2011.

The property will be a futuristic hotel designed to reflect the unique structure and experience of the Himalayas, the group said. Architect Arata Isozaki and interior design firm KCA International have been appointed to work on the project.

The hotel will boast 400 rooms including 70 luxury suites, and will be located within the arts and lifestyle hub the Himalayas Centre. Also contained in the centre are a modern art museum, a theatre, as well as retail space.

VENU Himalayas Hotel Shanghai is the sixth management agreement signed by Jumeirah Group in China and brings the total number of properties under development or in operation by Jumeirah globally to 43.

The Jumeirah Group first announced in April the launch of its new hospitality brand.

“VENU Hotels will, when launched, fulfil a clear market need and one that is highly complementary to the Jumeirah Hotels and Resorts brand. We are looking forward to a busy and exciting period opening new hotels, attracting new guests and introducing a new hotel brand concept to the world,” said Gerald Lawless, executive chairman of Jumeirah Group, in a statement released at the time.

In addition to VENU, the Jumeriah Group’s portfolio also includes Jumeirah Living, the Group’s luxury brand of serviced residences; Talise, its global spa brand; Jumeirah Restaurants, its restaurant division; Wild Wadi Waterpark; and The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management, which offers degree programmes in hospitality management.
