While hotel brand expansion is going full speed ahead in the Asia Pacific region, many in the industry have expressed concern that the numbers of new hotels coming onto the market aren’t being matched by the numbers of skilled management professionals available in the region.
In an
interview with
Hotel Management Asia at the International Hotel Investment Forum in Macau in June this year, Dr Russell Arthur Smith, interim dean, Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management warned that the hotel industry will face a huge skills shortage in the future and pointed to management level positions as the biggest recruitment headache coming up.
In a separate
interview, Michael Sengol, CEO of Meritus Hotels & Resorts, also stressed the problem. “There are not enough qualified people in the market. Management staff are not being trained in Asia….You don’t have top management readily available…The market is now soaring upwards and you don’t have people to deliver customer expectation,” he said.
HMA takes a look at a few of the regional courses available for professionals wanting to move up the management ladder.
This is what all of our schools need, a better anchoring into reality, I don't see it any other way if we want to become better and evolve.
