Carlson embarks on aggressive Asia Pacific expansion drive

Hospitality and travel company Carlson Hotels has embarked on a huge expansion drive in Asia Pacific.
The Minneapolis-headquartered firm yesterday revealed it has signed agreements to open 75 properties across its brand portfolio in the region by 2013.
The firm also announced the signing of four new hotel management agreements in China. These include the Radisson Hotel Chongqing Shapingba in Chongqing city in southwest China, Radisson Hotel Wuxi Hi-Tech Zone in southeast Jiangsu province, and Radisson Plaza Resort Huizhou in southeast Guangdong province, all scheduled to open in the first half of 2012, as well as the Park Plaza Chengdu South in Sichuan province which is slated to open at the end of this year.
"Accelerated development in Asia Pacific is a key priority of our Ambition 2015 growth strategy ," said Carlson president, CEO and director Hubert Joly. "This market is a key focus area in our plans to increase Carlson Hotels' portfolio by at least 50% to more than 1,500 hotels in operation by 2015."
The company said the expansion will be led by its upscale brand Radisson which has 43 hotels under development, making it the fastest growing upscale brand in Asia Pacific, according to Carlson.
Carlson announced earlier this week that it will open its first Radisson Blu hotel in the region later this year. The property, a 400-room located in the Philippines, is scheduled to open in September 2010.
Carlson said it plans to open 18 properties across the region in 2010.
Nine of these will be Radisson hotels, the firm said.
Carlson announced in March its objective to double its portfolio by 2015 to more than 1,500 hotels in operation, and to revitalize its Radisson brand.
